To help a young canine get rid of puppy hiccups the owner must first understand why they occur. They are normal in young dogs. Some breeds are more prone to them than others. Canines with short noses may tend to get them more often. Dealing with the annoyance from gulping too much air requires some attention to the animal’s eating habits.

There are bowls designed to slow down the speed in which the canine consumes his or her food. Purchasing and using one of these special bowls will teach the young animal that eating fast is not a good idea. It is a noninvasive technique of teaching good eating habits and manners that will also help eliminate dog hiccups in both younger and older pets.

Serving smaller amounts of food in the bowl can also slow down eating. If the animal sees less in the bowl there is less need to devour the contents. Putting small amounts of food in the bowl will teach the animal to take breaks while eating and will help deter the gulping of air, which is related to eating fast. Always remove the food if the hiccups have started to reduce the risk of the animal choking on more food.

Though increasing carbon dioxide in humans is effective a pet owner is not able to make the animal breathe into a paper bag or hold its breath. It is also not a good idea to block the animal’s breathing to stop puppy hiccups. This may lead to aggression and fear.

Trying to scare away the sounds from gulped air is another sure way to create fear or aggression in a canine. This is not likely to be very effective. There are some additional steps pet owners can try which are safe for the animal.

Try giving a small bowl of water or milk. If the animal drinks he or she may stop breathing long enough for the puppy hiccups to go away. Getting the animal involved in a rigorous game of fetch may also cause the pet to change breathing as it requires movement of the diaphragm.

If none of these tactics work the animal may be under the influence of stress. Try some massage or methods of getting the animal to relax. This may work in pets who tend to be high strung and highly excitable. Reducing or eliminating competition for food from other dogs will help those animals in households with other dogs. The stress and excitement of having to get every last morsel before the others is gone and may create a more relaxed eating environment.

Some young canines may need the help of a veterinarian if the problem continues or persists for a long period of time. This could be an indication of an underlying problem like intestinal blockage or under-developed respiratory system. As long as the problem does not last for hours the animal will likely experience the issue less often if methods for slowing down the eating process are used.

Dog hiccups usually go away on their own. Pet owners can help best by keeping the animal calm and preventing the gulping of food. The same applies for water. If the pet drinks too fast smaller amounts can be placed in the bowl initially. Taking water along during a long walk or for a trip to the park can keep the animal hydrated. It will reduce the likelihood that the canine will gulp the water as soon as he or she has access to it. When in doubt as to whether the condition may be caused by something else it is best to consult the expertise of the veterinarian.

Pregnant women love to feel their infants’ movements’ in-utero. Fetal movements affirm there is an active life growing within them. These movements also help the mother-to-be feel connected to her infant. Fathers-to-be, who cannot feel the other effects of pregnancy that their partners experience, can feel their infant’s movements when their baby kicks, punches and bounces around in the mother’s womb. Often expectant parents, especially the mother, can feel a rhythmic jumping or twitching feeling. That is the motion of the fetus having hiccups in the womb. Baby hiccups during pregnancy are a perfectly normal phenomenon.

Fetal hiccups may begin in the late first and the early second trimester of a pregnancy, but the mother cannot feel them yet at that point. By the third trimester, however, these hiccups can definitely be felt, although when they are first experienced the mother may not know exactly what these new movements are. Some babies hiccup intermittently, some every day and others several times a day. All of these are ranges of normal for fetal hiccups. Late in pregnancy hiccups can actually be seen, as they cause movement all through the mother’s belly. Hiccups are harmless to the fetus and actually are seen as a sign of good fetal health.

The diaphragm is the name of the muscle that helps people breathe. Hiccups occur when the diaphragm forcefully contracts unexpectedly. Limited research has been done on the phenomena of fetal hiccups but they are generally believed to occur when the fetus breathes in or drinks amniotic fluid. When the fluid exits and enters the undeveloped lungs, the small diaphragm will contract. The result of a series of these contractions is a case of hiccups in the womb. Baby hiccups during pregnancy are almost always felt by a mother-to-be at least once during her pregnancy. Many women feel their baby experience these fetal hiccups daily.

Some mothers experience anxiety about feeling baby hiccups during pregnancy because in some extreme cases large amounts of hiccupping by the fetus may be linked to umbilical cord compression. New mothers particularly need to mention their baby’s hiccups to their obstetrician so they can be assured that all is well with the baby. Others worry that hiccupping hurts the baby but that is not so. Hiccupping is not uncomfortable for unborn babies, as it is for grownups.

Baby hiccups during pregnancy have been observed on many ultrasounds. Some doctors and scientists suggest that this rhythmic workout for the diaphragm may help strengthen it and help prepare the little lungs and diaphragm for breathing when the baby is born. They also can help regulate the baby’s heart rate. Hiccups are a fetal reflex that is also dependent on the complete development of the baby’s central nervous system. Once the nervous system has developed enough, hiccups can begin. Once they begin, they can grow stronger week by week until birth. May infants continue to experience hiccups after birth for a few months. Some mothers have reported that their infants hiccup the same amount after birth as they did in-utero.

If a mother-to-be is concerned that her baby is having too many episodes of hiccups, she can begin to jot down a record of them to share with her doctor. By writing down the number of occurrences per day, the length of the episode, and what she is doing at the time or has eaten prior to the episode and sharing this information with the doctor, she can be reassured that her baby’s hiccups are normal and can just enjoy the experience as another sign of the precious new life developing within her.

Being a common condition faced by millions of people all over the world on a daily basis, treatment of hiccups has many aspects including traditional folk remedies based on popular beliefs, home based methods and medical practices. A hiccup is generally a single or a multiple spasms of the breathing diaphragm spaced over a short span of time which may or may not be accompanied by movement of the shoulders, abdomen and throat. Hiccups may also result in chirpy squeak sound that is caused by rapid inhalation due to the spasms. This condition is known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter in medical terms and is generally corrected after a small interval of time on its own accord.

Home Based Remedies For Hiccups

There are numerous home remedies for hiccups treatment some of which are based on traditional practices whereas others have scientific background to them. There are some methods which attempt to retain the carbon dioxide in the body which tend to inhibit the spasms in the diaphragm. Holding the breath back for a small time intends to achieve this which results in stopping of the hiccups. The other methods attempt to stimulate two nerves running from the brain right up to the stomach called the nasopharynx and the vagus nerve which lead to cessation of the spasms. A quick glass of water can stop the spasm immediately. Other methods like having someone to frighten the individual to divert attention, biting and pulling the tongue, firmly biting a piece of lemon, gargling with ginger water and sniffing salts also affect these nerves to immediately bring the spasms to a halt. The use of corn syrup for children and placing a piece of sugar candy on the reverse side of the tongue are common home remedies that have been known to be effective in this condition.

Medical Practices for Treatment Of Hiccups

These spasms are not a serious or life threatening condition in most cases and often stop within a short span of time without the requirement of any specialized hiccups treatment. The home remedies are sufficient in majority of cases to arrest the spasms. However there are certain medical conditions that can result in prolonged period of hiccups caused by various reasons including metabolic diseases, diabetes, kidney malfunction and electrolyte imbalance. In these situations medical assistance is required to effectively deal with such continuous hiccups. CND disorders, infection as in pneumonia and LCD and nerve damage or irritations have the potential of aggravating the condition seriously. Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) is the most common medication that is prescribed by doctors in case of continuous spasms. haloperidol (Haldol) and metoclopramide (Reglan) are two other formulas that have been recommended by most physicians for this condition. Sedatives, analgesic, stimulants and muscle relaxants also have the ability to alleviate continuous hiccups in many circumstances. Baclofen which is an anti-spasmodic medicine may be required in cases where the body is resistant to other medications. For cases that have a prolonged history of continuous and serious conditions of this nature, even a Phrenic nerve surgery may have to be resorted to as the ultimate solution.

For all the methods of hiccups treatment it is essential to first differentiate between normal small scale spasms that cease on their own and continuous ones that are caused due to other medical conditions at the earliest. Checking whether the affected individual has had anything hot and spicy immediately prior to the occurrence is another great idea to ascertain the actual nature of the condition. Too much of carbonated beverages and exposure to fumes may also be the cause. It is advisable to check with the individual regarding past treatment methods that have been effective before deciding on the remedial measures.

What Causes Hiccups

The muscles can sometimes have contractions that are sudden and part of what causes hiccups because they are involuntary contractions.

One of the most frustrating human conditions is also one of the most curious. Everyone has found themselves wondering what causes hiccups at some point, and the answer to that question can be found below. Keep read to learn more about the origin the irritating hiccup.

Hiccups are simply involuntary muscle contractions in the diaphragm. Under normal circumstances, the diaphragm operates in perfect harmony: it helps to pull air into the lungs and it assists in expelling the air on an exhale. Sometimes the nerve that controls the diaphragm becomes irritated from a sudden in rush of air; when the air hits the larynx, a hiccup occurs.

The description above outlines the physiology of the hiccup, but it doesn’t really explain what causes hiccups. There are a number of factors that can contribute a bad case of the hiccups, some of which include spicy food, hysterical laughter, eating (hot) food too quickly, or a severe cough. Keeping these factors firmly in mind will at least allow hiccup sufferers to predict when the onset is most likely.

Simply put, anything that causes air to rush into the epiglottis in a fast or unpredictable fashion can cause hiccups. While the condition can be annoying and embarrassing, it usually lasts for a relatively short period of time. In very rare cases, hiccups could be the manifestation of a medical condition. Those who are wondering if their hiccups are serious enough to warrant medical attention may want to consider documenting each individual onset of the hiccups, along with what was happening just before the hiccups started. If the documentation suggests that someone has very frequent or severe hiccups, they may want to discuss the problem with their family physician.

Now that the question “What causes hiccups?” has been answered, many are probably wondering how to get rid of the aggravating things. There are a number home remedies that could potentially rid an individual of the hiccups. For instance, some suggest holding the breath and counting to ten, while others insist that drinking water through a dishtowel will work. Still others believe that putting sugar under the tongue will eliminate the hiccups, and another group thinks that startling someone with a loud “BOO!” will cure the problem. Obviously, there are a lot of opinions out there on the best way to get rid of the hiccups, but the real answer is much simpler: anything that will stop the diaphragm from contracting will stop the hiccups. So, if the methods mentioned above fail to stop the hiccups, consider other ways to keep the diaphragm from contracting; even if it means tightening the muscle and holding it for several seconds.

It’s not difficult to learn how hiccups occur, and it’s not even really that hard to figure out how to stop hiccups. Most people have a harder time concealing the sometimes embarrassing noise that the hiccup emits. Those in this situation should simply do their best to put some distance between themselves and their business associate or date, engage their favorite hiccup cure, and get back as quickly as possible. Remember that everyone gets the hiccups, so most people will be understanding.

Now that you’ve learned about the causes of hiccups, how to stop them, and techniques for making the situation less embarrassing, you should be ready to deal with any case of hiccups that come your way. Just remember that the easiest hiccups to get rid of are the ones that never begin. When possible, eat slowly, avoid super-spicy foods, and keep your laughter non-hysterical; this should keep the incidences of hiccups to a minimum for most.

are hiccups dangerous

Hiccups is actually classified by a few categories being: hiccup bout, persistent hiccup, and a intractable hiccup. Usually they are not very serious but it depends on what kind it is plus how long they have been going.

Everybody gets the hiccups once in a while, but when they start to become a problem, it can be very annoying. Many people have asked the question: are hiccups dangerous? They can be. It depends on how long you have had them and whether or not they are negatively affecting you.

What Causes Hiccups?
In order to fully understand hiccups, we must look at what causes them. Hiccups are caused by an involuntary contraction of our muscles in the throat area. The epiglottis produces the noise you hear whenever you hiccup. Irritation of the diaphragm is primarily what causes the hiccups. If air comes into your diaphragm too quickly, it can irritate your diaphragm, causing muscular contractions thereby producing hiccups.

Do Certain Foods or Drinks Produce Hiccups?
Yes, sometimes what you eat or drink can cause you to get the hiccups. If you eat extremely spicy food or if you just eat or drink something too quickly, it could cause diaphragm irritation, leading to the hiccups. Hot food tends to make the epiglottis irritated too, which can also cause a case of the hiccups.

Bodily Functions that Cause Hiccups
As interesting as it sounds, some of the most basic bodily functions can also produce hiccups. If you are sick and have a continuous cough, your diaphragm is irritated from the constant pressure and strain caused by the cough, so you could start hiccupping. If you laugh oddly, you could get a case of the hiccups then too, if it puts strain on the diaphragm.

When are Hiccups Dangerous?
Some medical conditions cause people to get the hiccups, and often they tend to go away. They can be dangerous, however, so if you cannot stop hiccupping, if they persist for days, or if they are triggered by something specific, you may want to go consult a doctor. Hiccups may be caused due to an allergic reaction to something, or if you eat spicy food. If that is the case, just stay away from whatever is causing you to have the hiccups in the first place. If you have a chronic case of hiccups, it could be a medical condition that requires treatment. Some doctors prescribe medications for people with chronic hiccups.

Hiccups can also be dangerous when people have liver problems, tumors, cancer, lesions, problems associated with the bladder, hepatitis, or sometimes a variety of other medical conditions. In fact, it is rare, but hiccups can cause death in people with these conditions. Some people experience anxiety or depression issues related to hiccups. If a person has been hiccupping for days or weeks and cannot stop, he or she might become worried. Then, not finding any cure and not knowing what else to do, he or she could worry about it constantly, causing depression, and even some emotional instability in some people. That is why, if your hiccups persist for more than a day, you should consult a doctor immediately.

How to Treat Hiccups
In most cases, hiccups do not need treatment. After a while, the hiccups just stop on their own and go away. If you cannot get them to go away on their own, you could try drinking a glass of water, or even a bottled water. Water seems to do the trick for most people with hiccups, largely because it soothes the irritated diaphragm. If your hiccups persist, go to the doctor. He or she may be able to prescribe medication to relieve you of the hiccups.

Are hiccups dangerous? In most cases, they are not. However, this is a very good question to ask, because sometimes they can be. If you have hiccups that persist for more than a day, go to the doctor right away and discuss treatment options.

newborn hiccups

Newborn babies often have newborn hiccups. This usually happens when the baby is only six months of age or younger. Sometimes newborn hiccups could even happen while they are inside the womb.

Newborn Hiccups are extremely common. In fact, health researchers have found that a baby can get hiccups even before he or she is born. Newborn hiccups may seem like a cause for concern, but they usually are not. Some of the most common causes of hiccups in infants include: air swallowing, excitement, mother’s diet and a condition called GERD.

Infants have a tendency to swallow air, especially when they are being fed. Hiccups occur when that extra air is bounced back up from the diaphragm. Excitement is another one of the causes of baby hiccups. When a baby gets excited, the muscles of his or her diaphragm become stimulated. This stimulation causes the muscles of the diaphragm to contract, which causes hiccups.

Nursing mothers have to be cognizant of the fact that everything they eat affects their babies. Researchers have found that caffeine, shellfish, chocolate, wheat and eggs can cause hiccups in infants. Mothers who limit their consumption of those foods can reduce their baby’s chances of developing hiccups.

Gastroesophageal reflex disease, which is also referred to as GERD is another probably cause of baby hiccups. This is a condition that causes the contents of the stomach to backflow into the esophagus. Some of the symptoms of GERD include vomiting, spitting and coughing. Parents who are concerned should take their baby to the doctor. However, it is important to note that this condition is usually not a cause for concern because most infants grow out of it.

There are a few things that parents can do to reduce their baby’s chances of getting the hiccups. One of the things that many doctors suggest doing is keeping the baby on a regular schedule. They suggest feeding the baby until he or she is satisfied. Babies that are overfed are more likely to develop hiccups.

Experts also suggest burping the baby frequently while feeding. Burping prevents gas from building up in the stomach. It also helps bring up the excess air that the baby might have swallowed during feeding. There has also been evidence to suggest that giving a baby a pacifier can help treat hiccups.

If newborn hiccups are caused by GERD, that condition will have to be treated in order to stop the hiccups. A doctor may prescribe a medication that reduces the amount of acid in the stomach. The doctor may also suggest making changes in the baby’s lifestyle, such as feeding him or her in an upright position. A physician may also suggest feeding the baby thicker formula.

There are a number of home remedies that have been shown to potentially treat hiccups. Colic Cold Gripe water has been shown to help cure hiccups in infants. Placing sugar on the infant’s tongue can also help cure hiccups. Experts believe that the sweetness of sugar causes the diaphragm to stop contracting. Additionally, plain water has also been proven to be very effective for treating hiccups in newborn. Experts suggest giving the baby water at frequent intervals.

Hiccups are usually normal and harmless, but there are some instances where parents should be concerned. If the baby’s hiccups last for more than a few minutes, then the parents may want to consider calling the doctor. Additionally, if the hiccups are accompanied by other symptoms such as coughing and vomiting, then a doctor should be consulted. Long-lasting hiccups with accompanying symptoms may be an indication of a more serious condition.

Hiccups typically become less frequent as the infant gets older. Parents can help prevent baby hiccups by burping the baby and feeding him or her as the doctor recommends. Additionally, mothers who breastfeed need to watch their diets.

One thing that people know and can confirm is that when a person has chronic hiccups it can be very annoying. There are some who struggle with hiccups for a very long period and sometimes for weeks at a time, which is also known as chronic hiccups.

Many people find stories of people with chronic hiccups entertaining. Some evening television shows and news reports make light of the situations. While occasional hiccups are normal experiencing them with any regular frequency is not. It is a sign or symptom of an underlying medical condition that could become serious.

The nerves of the upper spine are thought to be involved in producing the hiccups. Eating or drinking too fast can send a signal to the nerve involved, which then send a signal to the valve at the top of the throat to close. This is what produces the telltale noise.

There are many methods or movements that can help rid a person of the annoying noises if they do not go away on their own in a few minutes. Any action that limits the amount of oxygen the body takes in can help. This is why holding the breath or drinking water slowing without breathing can sometimes be effective. Any action that increases carbon dioxide and temporarily decreases oxygen intake can be effective. Breathing into a paper bag is another method commonly used.

For bouts that last several hours with no relief, a physician can provide relief. A tube can be passed into the esophagus to relieve any excess air that may have been swallowed. This may sound like a frightening proposition but can provide immediate relief. A single incident is probably not enough cause to worry about illness.

However, if the problem reoccurs with regularity a physician may want to conduct a thorough physical exam. The reason is that many underlying medical conditions can cause this phenomenon when it occurs or a regular basis. Common illnesses that lead to chronic hiccups include those that affect the lungs and those that affect the digestive system.

Lung disorders like asthma may cause hiccups when an individual attempts to get more air by gasping. Bronchitis, lung tumors, and pneumonia may also be caused related to the respiratory system. Sometimes such illnesses are hard to diagnose and some individuals may fail to display any obvious symptoms.

Many people are diagnosed with pneumonia each year who have not noticed any symptoms related to breathing. They may have notices some mild flu-like symptoms like fever and aching. Having a tumor in the lung is a serious condition that may indicate the presence of a malignancy. The sooner it is diagnosed and treated the better the outcome for the individual.

Digestive illnesses that can lead to chronic hiccups include bowel disorders, liver disease, and milder conditions like reflux or hiatal hernia. Reflux can be treated with prescription medication. Keeping the head of the bed elevated fifteen degrees is also helpful.

those who suffer from hiatal hernia may want to consider surgical repair. If hiccups occur on a regular basis this can provide a strong incentive for having the hernia repaired. Inflammatory bowel conditions that constrict or cause inflammation may prevent partially digested foods from moving forward as they should. This can lead to increased air in the digestive system. Liver disease often affects the digestive process as well.

If no underlying causes for chronic hiccups can be found there are other procedures a physician might use. Anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and sedatives may be used temporarily. A local anesthetic used in the back of the throat will relax the valve in the esophagus and prevent if from continue to make the classic noise.

Stimulating the diaphragm through movement or electrical stimulation are some interventions that do not involve medications and can provide natural relief. Those who experience occasional episodes after drinking carbonated beverages or after eating should consume the items more slowly and take special care not to swallow air when chewing and swallowing.

Another treatment for chronic hiccups might include patients being on anti-psychotic drugs, or either sedatives. Another one that is popular is the rectal massage because it helps to provide some relief. Carbonated beverages, or vinegar might contribute to the chronic hiccups. In some cases that is severe surgical intervention might be needed whenever the nerve that is phrenic must actually become crushed. When it becomes crushed it can either stop the chronic hiccups, or reduce them.

In some cases chronic hiccups might be caused from: lesions, surgery, tumors, irritation of the bladder, pregnancy, pancreatitis, hepatitis, and liver cancer. When they continue and will not stop for long periods then the doctor might run some tests and see if there is something else that causing it or if it could be as a result from one of these conditions. If it is as a result with one of these medical conditions then the treatment for chronic hiccups would vary but still might have either a herbal, or some kind of medication given depending on the cause.

The side effects given for chronic hiccups vary. In most cases the side effects are usually rare, or might not happen at all. Some of the drugs that are given to help patients with hiccups include but not limited to: metoclophramide, haloperidol, baclofen, and chlorpromazine. Only in cases that might be severe is baclofen given because it can actually suppress the hiccups by working as an anti-spasmodic. It is suggested that before any drugs or medications is given that a digital rectal massage is given so that it can cause a cessation that is immediate with hiccups. In some cases with chronic hiccups this might not be enough but usually the message therapy is known to work over 90% of the time and has a lot of positive reviews with it and is used on patients that feel uncomfortable with taking medications.

Hiccups can be aggravating and even painful if they go on for hours. Sometimes, hiccups cause embarrassment, discomfort and frustration for the sufferer. Hiccups are annoying, but getting rid of hiccups is really quite easy. There are many tips and tricks on how to stop hiccups, the key is to find one you like and remember to use it next time you get a case of hiccups.

The most commonly used method for how to stop hiccups is holding your breath. Take a deep breath, hold it for at least a two second count, and swallow twice while holding your breath. Repeat this process for three rounds. Anytime you feel a hiccup coming, take a deep breath, hold it and swallow in rounds of three until the hiccups pass. You can actually avert a lengthy attack by stopping it as it as soon as it begins through controlled breathing. Since it works and you do not need anything to perform this hiccup remedy, most people find the controlled breath technique the easiest answer to how to cure hiccups.

Another common how to stop hiccups cure is drinking water while your head is inverted. Fill a large mouthed cup and bend at the waist with your head between your legs. Drink from the cup while in this inverted position and try not to breathe as you drink. If you find you need to take a breath, do not stand upright, continue to drink, breathe through your nose and do not stop until you have finished the entire cup of water. Once the water is gone, remain bent at the waist for a couple of breaths and then return to an upright position. You should be hiccup free.

Another how to stop hiccups cure most people find easy and effective involves the use of sugar. By overloading the tongue’s nerve endings with sweetness, a sugar overload can halt hiccups. Place a teaspoonful of sugar at the back of the tongue and swallow, repeat a couple of times if necessary.

Getting rid of hiccups can also be accomplished by manipulation of the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve reaches into the auditory system and some people claim stopping your ears can activate that nerve and cure hiccups. Just be sure to be gentle and do not stick your fingers deeply or aggressively into your ears. You do not want to cause ear damage while getting rid of hiccups, so be careful and gentle when using this technique. The vagus nerve is also called into play when using the hiccup cure scare technique. Having someone or something scare you can overwhelm the vagus nerve and end hiccups quickly.

If you have tried all the above methods and nothing has worked, try taking an antacid. Antacids with magnesium are particularly helpful in getting rid of hiccups. One or two tablets should do the trick, and your hiccups should be gone.

Hiccups are annoying and often uncomfortable. Once you know how to stop hiccups, you can stop them quickly if you remember these tips. In addition to the above techniques, avoid eating quickly, spicy foods and overeating to prevent the onset of hiccups. Experts agree hiccups are often brought on as a signal from the digestive system. Sent to your body as a signal to slow down the pace of your eating, to back off alcohol, spices or foods hiccups can be a warning sign of overindulgence. Listen to your body and limit your intake of alcohol, spicy or irritating foods. Remember these tips and eat at a slow, steady pace and never again be bothered by seemingly never-ending, uncomfortable, embarrassing and annoying hiccups.
